When am I addicted?

Before being able to determine if you are addicted, we should make clear what addiction really is.

Addiction
Some people are addicted when they are physically dependent on a substance. However, not all addictive substances are physically addictive. The main characteristic of addiction is the psychological dependence. All addictions have this characteristic in common.

Irresistible need
Addiction evolves around a very large irresistible need to get a certain substance or show a behaviour. This need determines the user's entire life. Addicts spend a lot of time and energy on obtaining the substance. They also neglect or no longer take part in important social, work-related or recreational activities. They continue using despite being aware of the negative consequences.

Loss of control
Another characteristic of addiction is loss of control. The substance or behaviour controls the user.

Recognition
Addicts like to share their experiences with others or deny being addicted and pretend that everything is fine. Addicts easily recognize other addicts.
