![]() Eating disorderWhat is it?There are several kinds of eating disorders. Anorexia and bulimia nervosa are the most common ones. Usually, eating disorders originate from a feeling of being unhappy about yourself. In order to cover your pain, you will over-eat or not eat at all. Dieting can make you feel strong and secure. Your emotions will fade because you will no longer feel really happy or really sad. Bulimics typically attempt to dull certain emotions. What are the consequences? Eating disorders will have serious physical as well as social consequences. Physical consequences of anorexia will often include: low body temperature and fatigue. Common consequences are also low blood pressure and slow heart beat which could cause dizziness. Because anorexia will cause the body to lack necessary nutrients, it can be fatal. Bulimia can cause deterioration of tooth enamel, a sore throat and chronic hoarseness due to the vomiting. Laxatives can cause stomach cramps. Vomiting and using laxatives can even seriously affect heart and kidneys, even to the point of cardiac arrest. Eating disorders also have serious social consequences. People struggling with eating disorders are so preoccupied with food and control that they will withdraw from friends and activities. This will cause them to become isolated. They will often become depressed. |
