Alcohol use amongst church workers

The Bible offers several guidelines for alcohol use for pastors and church workers. Paul's letter to Timothy shows, for example, that people who are more or less dependent on alcohol should not fulfill a spiritual ministry.

1 Timothy 3:2-8

"Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap. Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain."

Another guideline is offered by Leviticus 10:8-9. This text shows that spiritual workers should perform their work sober. In other words: they should not drink alcohol just before or during their work.

Leviticus 10:8,9
"Then the LORD said to Aaron, "You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the Tent of Meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. You must distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean, and you must teach the Israelites all the decrees the LORD has given them through Moses."
