Alcohol and the Bible

If you are familiar with the Bible, you probably know the story of Jesus turning water into wine. It was Jesus' first public miracle. The disciples also drank wine during the Last Supper. In biblical times, drinking wine symbolized wealth and a good, rich life. Back then, wine was the most common alcoholic beverage. It was wine without extra alcohol. Apart from describing the pleasant effects of wine, the Bible also mentions its medicinal effects in the treatment of wounds and stomach complaints.

"Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. (1 Timothy 5:23)

The Bible also clearly shows the negative side of alcohol use. In Proverbs:

"Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end, it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things." (Proverbs 23:29-33)

In short, the Bible acknowledges the positive effects of alcohol but also urges people to drink moderately and take responsibility for themselves and their (social) environment.
