When are you addicted?

Before you can determine whether or not you are addicted, you have to know what addiction is. Are you addicted when you drink eight glasses of alcohol per day but not when you drink seven? Many people would like to use such a set criterion but it is not that clear-cut. The question to ask is to what purpose a person uses an addictive substance in which circumstance.

Addiction
Some people believe addiction only includes physical dependence. But this is only a part of some types of addiction and certainly not all. Addiction typically includes psychological dependence. All addiction have this in common.

Irresistible craving
Addiction evolves around one large and irresistible craving after a certain addictive substance or to show a certain behavior. This craving determines the user's entire life. Addiction involves spending a large amount of time and energy on obtaining the substance. Furthermore, addicts negelect or completely give up important social, work-related and/or recreational activities. Addicts continue using despite knowing its negative consequences.

Loosing control
Another characteristic of addiction is loosing control: addicts begin loosing control over the use or behavior. The user is being controlled. The alcoholic's life evolves around alcohol, the drug user's life around drugs and the way to get to it as soon as possible.

Recognition
Addicts like to tell others about their experiences or deny their addiction and act like there is nothing wrong. Addicts easily recognize each other.
