12-steps program (Challenge One, Two and Three)

De Hoop's 12 steps program (Challenge One, Two and Three) is based on the so-called Minnesota model. The Twelve Steps of the Alcoholics Anonymous play an important role in the program.

Our 12-steps program can be divided into three parts:

  • A 24-hour treatment program with a duration of eight weeks (Challenge One)
  • A 24-hour supplementary treatment program with a duration of twelve weeks (Challenge Two)
  • A 2-day part-time treatment program with a duration of twelve weeks, as a continuation of the 24-hour program (Challenge Three).

Eligibility
Clients are eligible for treatment if they are:

  • 18 years of age and over
  • Male
  • Struggling with an addiction problem.

De Hoop will refer people to another program if they have:

  • Predominant psychiatric problems
  • An aversion against De Hoop's Christian identity.

Please note that De Hoop looks at each situation individually in order to decide whether De Hoop is able to provide the care necessary or whether De Hoop has to refer the client to another institution or clinic.

Aim
Breaking with addiction and abstinence are the most important goals of our 12-steps program. Breaking with addiction means a complete change of lifestyle. Such a complete change is necessary to facilitate a healthy lifestyle. Twelve-steps programs are a well-tried method of working on change.

After their treatment, clients may continue to work on abstinence by means of Stay Clean self-help groups (http://www.stayclean.nl/, Dutch), or other self-help groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

Program contents, Challenge One and Two
Treatment is intramural, which means that round-the-clock care is offered. Treatment takes place from 6.30 am until 10.00 pm. Our basic 12-steps program has a duration of eight weeks (Challenge One). If necessary, client may follow a supplementary program with a duration of twelve weeks (Challenge Two). The treatment program consists of several components, including:

  • Living in Balance training sessions: topics such as dealing with stress, triggers and cravings, sexuality, social skills, dealing with anger and the effects of addictive substances
  • Individual treatment: going through the Twelve Steps
  • Group sessions
  • Self-help groups
  • Other activities: sports, Bible studies, church visits, et cetera.

To a large extent, clients themselves are responsible for the processes going on in the clinic (clients do the household chores, they appoint someone who sees to it that rules are obeyed and they appoint someone who is in charge).

Visiting arrangements
Clients of the 12-steps treatment program may receive family members during weekends, but by appointment only. A maximum of two visitors at the same time is allowed.

Items to bring along
Before admission, clients will receive a letter mentioning the things they need to bring along for their stay at De Hoop. Most important are items necessary for daily care as well as clothes (including sports clothes) and a Bible.

Program contents, part-time treatment (Challenge Three)
This program is intended for people who have rounded off the 24-hour 12-steps program. Our 12-steps part-time treatment program (Challenge Three) is extramural, which means that housing is not provided. Part-time treatment takes places two days a week and has a maximum duration of twelve weeks.

Part-time 12-steps treatment (Challenge Three) offers clients the opportunity to go more deeply into the Twelve Steps. Eligible for part-time treatment are people who have followed the 24-hour program, and who are able to live independently as far as working and housing are concerned, but who do need treatment.

Christian identity
De Hoop's 12-steps program is based on our Christian identity. De Hoop regards each human being as a unique person, created to live in harmony with God, God's creation and fellow human beings. God has a purpose for everybody. Based on God's Word, we believe that complete recovery is possible. This Christian view is derived from De Hoop's main mission: helping people on their way to a new life. The 12-steps program is specifically Christian and all parts of the program are obligatory.

Finances
Treatment at De Hoop is paid for by the client's health insurance company. A referral letter from the client's GP is necessary. A single contribution of twenty euros will be asked from clients to pay for their laundry expenses.

Co-admission of children is not possible. Also, admission of women is not possible yet. During treatment, there are very few opportunities to arrange personal matters, such as consultations with employers, applications for benefits and taking subscriptions. De Hoop would therefore like clients to arrange such matters before admission.

Role of referring parties
Referring parties may do the following while putting forward and monitoring clients:

  • Providing official referral letters
  • Providing preliminary care
  • Motivating clients
  • Providing interim care (during waiting period)
