About De Hoop

Horeb community

Horeb is an easily accessible Christian community in Beekbergen. It is part of De Hoop. On its premises, about one hundred men and women receive help for substance abuse or psychosocial problems. Horeb's care is based on Christian principles. Residents help each other on their way to change. Together, they learn how to bear responsibility. Supervised by a team of counselors, they try to reach abstinence. Clients make a deliberate choice to live in a community as a form of treatment. For more information about Horeb, go to http://www.horeb.nl/ (Dutch).

Horeb wants to help people with addiction and psychosocial problems build a new life. At Horeb, clients may grow in their faith and become as God intended them to be.

View
Horeb offers treatment from a Christian view on man and a Christian view on addiction and addictive substances. This Christian view is derived from De Hoop's main mission: helping people on their way to a new life.

Being or becoming a Christian is no condition for staying at Horeb.

Eligibility
People with substance abuse problems and psychosocial problems are eligible for treatment at Horeb. During intake, it is decided whether a client is suitable for admission to Horeb or not.

Program contents
The treatment program consists of several components, including:

  • Introductory groups (alpha groups) - new residents participate in the alpha groups. Here, they become acquainted with the rules of Horeb and gain more insight into their problems. They search for the causes underlying their addiction.
  • Internship and work experience - at Horeb residents may gain work experience at several places, such as the laundry, maintenance service, administration, etcetera. At these places, clients develop their talents. Residents work there during the weekdays. It is each person's duty to ensure that everything functions well. New residents learn their skills from more experienced residents.
  • Social and practical skills - residents work on developing several skills, like bearing responsibility, social skills, teamwork, showing initiative, discipline, persistence, and ensuring a good quality of work.
  • Bible studies and thematic days - discussion of topics like values, view on God and view on man from a Christian perspective.

Duration
Residents of Horeb have to stay there at least three months. The average length of stay is 12 to 18 months. Horeb does not offer crisis care.

Intramural
Clients stay at Horeb round the clock.

Moving on
People living at Horeb receive no treatment. They make a deliberate choice to work on their problems in a Christian community. If it turns out in time that it is necessary to receive more help than Horeb can offer, clients may move on to other institutions like De Hoop in Dordrecht.

Identity
Horeb organizes daily and weekly prayers, Bible studies, and thematic days during which several topics are discussed from a Christian point of view. People requesting help do not have to be Christians per se. We do, however, want the Christian identity of Horeb and the employees of Horeb to be treated with respect.
